Popular styles of engraved promise rings vary with gender. We make three distinctive border styles to choose from that are equally popular. The oldest style known is the no-borders style promise ring that comes with a variety of exciting fonts. Our most popular font is the lordswsh. This font style has a striking resemblance to the lord of the rings symbols engraved in Elvish made in gold and is very popular from the movie The Lord of the Rings. Our decorative raised border style promise ring is used chiefly in the making of our Celtic wedding bands as well as our 10k and 14k gold and sterling silver promise rings. This border style is very practical because of it’s border that protects it’s engraving from nicks and scratches that can cause problems to the promise rings engraving. Our step-down border style promise rings are also very popular and equal to the no border and raised border in style. Our step-down borders are distinguished by their high polished lower rim on each side of an otherwise no border promise ring and comes with a satin brush finish around the center of this striking and attractive promise ring. Two Tone promise rings are now available for raised border promise rings and Celtic wedding bands with 10k or14k yellow gold bordering a sterling silver center for much smaller fee than two tone solid 14k gold promise ring or Celtic wedding bands. Gemstones can also be set in a bezel in between the raised border style promise rings again helping protect your personal engraving. A bezel is a rim of gold or sterling silver wrapped around your gemstone holding it securely in place. Generally this type of stone setting is the most practical for casual every-day wear of your promise ring jewelry.
Another common type of ring was called a "poesy ring." These rings were engraved bands with a typical pledge of love and fidelity reading, "Vous et nul autre" -- old French which translates to "You and no other."
Promise rings can be worn on any finger, but those symbolizing pre-engagement or chastity are generally worn on the left ring finger.
There are two schools of thought regarding the origin of the 3rd finger being designated the "ring finger." For those logical souls, this finger is the most practical one for wearing a ring. Protected by fingers on either side, and not as active as the first two fingers and thumb, it is a safe haven for jewelry. A more romantic notion is the ancient belief in a "vena amori," or vein of love, running from the 3rd left finger to the heart.
Pre-engagement Promise Rings are worn on the left hand. However, some wearers feel that there is less likelihood of confusing the ring with an engagement ring if it is worn on the right hand and therefore, right-hand wearing is gaining acceptance. Promise Rings for Monogamy : left or right ring finger. Also traditionally worn on the left hand, but concerns over confusion with an engagement ring have made it acceptable to wear on the right hand. The left hand is still preferred, however. Promise Rings of Sexual Abstinence : left ring finger. The intent is to someday replace this promise Promise Between Friends (non-romantic): any finger (including thumbs). In the case of rings exchanged between platonic friends, it is generally best to avoid the left ring finger so that there is no confusion of romantic intentions.
When choosing a promise ring for a man, avoid gemstones or choose a very small one.
A nice touch is to have the ring engraved with a brief synopsis of the promise made.
